La Rabida Children’s Hospital – Fiber Optic Upgrade and Clinic Addition
DTI’s Roles

 

As the prime contractor, DTI provided project management and was responsible for updating the existing network infrastructure for the existing hospital and installing new network infrastructure in the children’s outpatient clinic addition.

 

DTI removed the existing 62.5 fiber for the entire hospital, installed new 50µ MM Gigabit fiber to all IT closets, and installed over 100 client provided access points.

 

DTI installed new telecommunications infrastructure including voice/data, audio/video infrastructure cabling, CATV distribution cabling, fiber optic cabling installation, and IT closet buildouts.

 

DTI followed all of the appropriate rules, codes, and standards that are required for the installation of network infrastructure in hospitals.

Challenges:

  • Hospital employees were losing connectivity to the network because of outdated cabling and a lack of bandwidth.

  • The Children’s new outpatient clinic addition needed new telecommunications infrastructure to be connected to the rest of the hospital.

  • Rules and regulations for contractors working in a hospital environment needed to be understood and followed while accommodating the schedules of the hospital staff.

Overview:

La Rabida Children’s Hospital (https://larabida.org), located along Lake Michigan on the south side of Chicago, provides medical care to 9,000 children each year. It is affiliated with the University of Chicago medical school. As the number of patients requiring services increased, the hospital added an outpatient clinic center in 2014.

 

The hospital hired DTI to provide a fiber optic upgrade to the existing network infrastructure at the hospital and to provide the network infrastructure required for the buildout of its new 13,000 square-foot outpatient clinic center.
